We will be shutting down this Ning site at the end of Sept 2011.
There is not a lot of traffic here, it cost us $$$ every month and the Spammers have hit it.
Thank you all for all your support, please find us on our web site. Pitch In and let's continue to make a positive difference.

South Trans-Atlantic Gyre Research Expedition Update
Aloha Ocean Lovers
The donations are steady. Thank you all. You have stepped up to make this research voyage a reality. We feel confidant that we will make our goal, and as such have purchased the air plane tickets. We are not home free. As of 10 am, 10-24-2010, we have raised $4200.00. This is an incredible accomplishment in 10 days. I have been on the phone and email seems like 24/7. The support and enthusiasm is wonderful. We still have a long way to go in just 8 days. If you have committed to sending a financial contribution and have not done so, please do it now. http://www.gyrecleanup.org/
The team at 5Gyres.org is working diligently on all the details of the crew and equipment.
Pangaea Explorations is putting final touches on the Sea Dragon; this will be our home for a month at sea. Myself having never been at sea this long,
I am both excited and a little nervous; but Marcus and Anna have eased my mind. Their experience and solid team are very confident that all will go as planned.
The long range weather looks like perfect conditions for our 'Manta Trawl' to collect plastic samples as we cross the Atlantic from Rio De Janeiro to Cape Town South Africa.
With much gratitude

South Atlantic Gyre Research Voyage, 5Gyres.org, Pangaea Exploration & Environmental Cleanup Coalition
Posted on 19 October 2010 by Sundance
Aloha Dear Friends,
First, I would like to extend my heart-felt gratitude for all of your continued effort and attention in bringing health back to our planet through our oceans. We have had some exciting opportunities recently and would love your support.
As many of you are aware we have a developing relationship with Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins of http://5gyres.org/. We are all in agreement that research, education, prevention and collaboration are necessary to shift what is happening in our oceans and our collective future. Finding common ground is the key in collaborating our efforts to truly make a growing difference.
Well, we have just found out that our organization, Environmental Cleanup Coalition, has just been invited to join in a historical voyage to study the South Atlantic Gyre. This will be the first time such an extensive research will be done. Due to my lasting relationship with Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins, we have been invited to be a part of such an instrumental voyage.
To give you some background, Marcus is the lead marine scientist of Algalita Marine Research Foundation who has been studying the N. Pacific Gyre for over 14 years, along with Capt. Moore who is credited for discovering it. Marcus and Anna have put together a team and formed an organization called ’5 Gyres’ last year and have received funding to study the other gyres.
In order to be able to be a part of this historical expedition and assist in this critical research opportunity we need your help! We need to raise $8800.00 in the next 2 weeks. The GREAT NEWS is that we have raised $3000.00 in the last 7 days, because people know how critical this journey is to the future of our oceans. As one of our Advisory Counsel members puts it simply 100 people donating 100 dollars would make all the difference. Plus, it is tax-deductible!!
We are looking for sponsors who would like to gain major exposure as well as individual donations. The most effective way to donate and be a part of the difference is to simply click our DONATE BUTTON. Or send Cash check or money order to; Environmental Cleanup Coalition 10507 E. Zayante Rd. Felton CA 95018
I welcome any calls or emails if you would like to discuss this opportunity directly! As always, the oceans and continued focus on the health of our planet is why we are here. We also request that if inspired, share this message with those that you believe would be interested either through email as well as social media channels!
Thank you again for your continued energy in making a difference, our oceans thank YOU!
Sincerely,
Richard Sundance Owen
P.s. I have attached additional information about the ’5 Gyres Organization’ and Voyage Details below!

South Atlantic 5 Gyres
Continuing important research conducted early in 2010, the Sea Dragon will make the long run from Rio de Janeiro Brazil to Cape Town South Africa. Working with the 5 Gyres science team, this expedition will cross the South Atlantic Ocean looking for evidence of plastic accumulation in this ocean. Predicted by ocean models but never verified, this trip will take an important first look into this part of our world’s oceans. Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins will lead this trip with two Dale Selvam of Pangaea and a RYA Yachtmaster certified Skipper. The team will depart Brazil mid-November and arrive in Cape Town just in time for a (summer) Christmas. Cape Town presents a wild set of options for further travel beyond the trip – from bush safaris to wine tasting. A similar return trip from Namibia to Brazil will provide the team and guests with a second pass at this exciting area and research.
Learn more about the team at http://5gyres.org/
Trip Type: Research Expedition
Crew Complement: Science and up to six guest crew
Trip Duration: approximately 28 Days
Departure Date: 8 November

Thank you so much for your caring about the state of our planet and our oceans. As you may know, there is a plastic wasteland the size of Texas and 300 feet deep in a swirling area of the North Pacific Ocean known as the North Pacific Gyre. There are 9 such gyre's on the planet, and the other are now being explored to see if they are in the same condition.
With 90% of the world's fish gone from overfishing and pollution, and conditions such as this in our oceans, it is clear to many of us that action must be taken. This is why Richard Sundance Owen founded the Environmental Cleanup Coalition. We are currently in our infancy, working toward creating solutions to this epic challenge co-created by us all. The time is now, and this group is for all of us who care, to post our ideas, any research or additional activity around the Gyre, any inspirations, media, links and/or quotes we discover, so that we can begin to build resonance and awareness around the need to handle this very large challenge. This is a grass roots movement, it is obvious by the lack of an effective solutions in the Gulf oil disaster by the government or BP that environmental issues are up to us.
